As a popular neighborhood theatre, the Queen had a special club and matinee shows for kids. Above they are lined up to see Tarzan on August I9, I95I. Eventually the open outer lobby around the box office seen here was enclosed. (Courtesy Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.)

The Queen in Kaimuki was Franklin Theatrical Enterprises second theatre, designed by Lyman Bigelow, and opened June 29, I936, with the film Loves of a Dictator and a stage play by the Hollywood Players, The Milky Way. The 85o-seat theatre had a shallow stage, but nonetheless featured live productions in the I93os. Above is a photograph of the Queen in I943.

This rare view of the Queen interior probably dates from the i95os, when many theatres installed larger screens for CinemaScope films. The measurements were made by theatre suppliers R. L. Grosh. Note the bottom of the raised fire curtain, with the word "asbestos," once ironically assuring patrons of safety. (Courtesy Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.)

The remodeled later marquee and vertical sign illuminate the neighborhood on August 20, I95I. The Queen evolved into adult films in the 1970s and is long closed, but still graces Waialae Avenue, albeit in poor condition. The Friends of the Queen Theater group and many residents are hopeful it can again become a vibrant part of the Kaimuki community. (Courtesy Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.)
